Background

EB Falcão School features 700 m² of green areas.

Through nature-based solutions installed as part of the European project “MyBuildingIsGreen”, the site has served as an exemplary space. On this occasion, around thirty policymakers, municipal technicians, municipal company representatives, and members of the Municipal Environment Council visited the school’s 700 m² of green roofs and façades, as well as its photovoltaic panels.

Architect Ana Mesquita, a member of the National Association of Green Roofs (ANCV), together with Engineer Rui Pimenta, administrator at the Porto Energy Agency, presented the rainwater harvesting system installed at the school. Water collected from vegetated and non-vegetated roofs is directed to separate containers, allowing comparative analysis of flow patterns, before being channeled to a pond in the nearby community garden.

This solution not only provides strong pedagogical value, but also reduces water waste and supports the conservation of local biodiversity.

ANCV’s Role

_The Portuguese National Association of Green Roofs (ANCV) contributed by:

_Providing technical consulting for the installation of the green roof at EB Falcão School;

_Disseminating the project, encouraging other Portuguese municipalities to adopt similar nature-based infrastructure solutions.
