Background

The Municipality of Matosinhos aims to implement nature-based solutions (NBS) as part of its strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 and to promote a sustainable, inclusive, and high-quality living environment.

The Mayor of Matosinhos, Eng.ª Luísa Salgueiro, highlighted the “valuable, important, and decisive work of ANCV, which can help Matosinhos reach its sustainability and carbon neutrality goals by 2030. In Matosinhos, we do not aim only to build and grow; we strive for a territory where people can enjoy a high quality of life.”

She added: “The evidence that green roofs can be part of the solution motivated this partnership with ANCV, which has worked with several Portuguese municipalities to support them in preparing these decisions, taking into account the diversity of the territory and its different realities.”

ANCV’s Role

The Portuguese National Association of Green Roofs (ANCV) contributed by:

_Providing technical consulting for the green roofs project in the Municipality of Matosinhos;
_Organizing a workshop for municipal technicians to build capacity and raise awareness of nature-based solutions;
_Disseminating the project nationally and internationally, encouraging other municipalities—especially Portuguese ones—to adopt similar green infrastructure solutions.
