The University of Aveiro has been a public foundation under private law since 2009. It is currently attended by around 16,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students, of which 12% are international students. The academic community also includes around 1,800 professors and researchers and 980 members of technical, administrative, and management staff.

Based on the Civil Engineering program of the University of Aveiro, which started in the 1996/1997 academic year, the Department of Civil Engineering (DECivil) is the organic unit of the university’s structure corresponding to this field of knowledge. In addition to teaching and research, DECivil promotes the transfer of knowledge and technology to society.

DECivil has 20 faculty members, of which 17 hold a PhD and 5 are invited lecturers, as well as 9 researchers. The department is responsible for teaching the Integrated Master’s in Civil Engineering (currently in transition), the Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering, the Master’s in Civil Engineering, the Master’s in Heritage Rehabilitation, the Specialization Course in Risks and Sustainable Rehabilitation, and the Doctoral Program in Civil Engineering. The Integrated Master’s program is recognized by the Order of Engineers and by the European Network for Accreditation of Engineering Education and has received the EUR-ACE label. The Bachelor’s and Master’s in Civil Engineering, as well as the Bachelor’s and Master’s in Heritage Rehabilitation and the Doctoral Program in Civil Engineering, are accredited by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES).
