Câmara Municipal de Mafra
The Municipality of Mafra is located in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area and covers a territorial area of 291.65 km², distributed across 11 civil parishes, with a population of 91,248 inhabitants in 2024.
Mafra’s territory is characterised by a strong duality between its Atlantic coastal area and its rural inland areas, bringing together significant cultural and built heritage, as well as natural and landscape resources of considerable value.
With the aim of strengthening resilience and adaptive capacity in response to climate risks and natural disasters, Mafra was one of the founding members of the Network of Municipalities for Local Adaptation to Climate Change, created in 2016. This network was established to promote a continuous process of adaptive planning, enhancing the capacity of Portuguese municipalities and other entities to integrate climate change adaptation into their policies and instruments. It also highlights the importance of the local scale in designing and implementing more effective, efficient and equitable solutions.
